Wind at 10m, 80m and 120m

Wind speed at ground level is not the wind your drone flies in. The forecast you check before leaving the house is measured at 10 metres — a Mini at 100 metres can be in noticeably different air.

Why altitude changes the number

Wind generally strengthens with height, because friction from the ground slows the air nearest the surface. The effect is largest over rough terrain, buildings and woodland, and smallest over open water. It is why a launch site can feel calm while a drone at height is fighting to hold position.

What the app shows

Each layer is shown as speed, direction and gusts, alongside an hourly forecast with the same colour-coded flyability rating the dashboard uses, calibrated to your drone.

Gusts matter more than the average

A steady wind within your drone's limit can still cause problems when a gust spikes well above it. DroneChecker checks sustained wind and gusts independently rather than averaging them, and on lighter airframes the gust threshold is usually the tighter of the two.
